Join Dr. Paul Barach at IDC Open Day on September 11th from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM for his presentation, “Designing for Resilience, Health, and Wellbeing,” co-created with Sean Hägen, FIDSA.

Industrial designers have played a pivotal role in shaping the way we experience healthcare, wellness products, and environments. In recent years, user-centered design principles have found a promising role in the healthcare sector where innovation and human-centered design are critical. Industrial design in healthcare must not just be thought of as creating aesthetically pleasing products; it must be appreciated for its role in optimizing patient safety through more intelligent, intuitive, and human-focused design methodologies.

Changing the way industrial designers are trained and socialized is key in creating truly patient-centered healthcare environments, offering comfort while reducing anxiety for patients and clinical staff. Modern designs need to incorporate evidence-driven elements such as soothing colors, appropriate materials, ergonomics, and innovative interactive solutions to create optimal workflow and healing conditions that promote timely recovery and well-being.

Attendees will leave with a greater awareness of …

1. Exploring new and innovative methods for industrial designers using more effective co-produced co-creation.

2. The importance of collaboration between industrial designers, healthcare professionals, patients and carers, engineers, marketeers, and other corporate stakeholders.

3. Designing smarter implementation in hospitals and community health settings that better integrate human factors and sound technology to ensure patient safety.

4. Engaging and supporting clinical staff workflow, promoting experiential joy while being affordable and supportive of the healthcare ecosystem.
