Since its establishment in 1995, BlackHägen Design (BH) has served as a premier consulting firm focused on mission-critical product design. Established in Orlando, Florida, by Robert “Sean” Hägen, our portfolio encompasses various successful projects spanning from ruggedized consumer goods to commercial/industrial equipment, military, medical devices.
Sean Hägen became inspired with the enormous potential of applying user-centered design principles to medical device design that he steered BH towards specializing in this field and becoming a pioneer practicing deep integration of human-factors engineering with creative product design. To this cause, Sean recruited Philip Remedios in 2002 as his business partner, who brought a wealth of experience as an executive manager and VP of R&D for a prominent medical device design consultancy in California. This strategic partnership laid the foundation for BH’s sustained growth, establishing our credibility and reputation in the industry.
BlackHägen relocated its base to Dunedin, Florida, a charming coastal town. Sean and Philip deliberately selected this Gulf Coast location for its proximity to healthcare facilities, convenient access to a major international airport, and outstanding quality of life. These strategic advantages have enabled BlackHägen to excel in medical design and research while attracting talented professionals who appreciate Florida's pleasant environment.
In 2017, we marked a major accomplishment with the completion of our expansive 6,500-square-foot establishment. The creation journey involved two separate design phases to fully manifest our concept for this cutting-edge facility. We concentrated on developing a structure that would accommodate our long-term needs while integrating advanced IT and AV technology, showcasing unique architectural features and maximizing workflow efficiency. We sought to blend our new base of operations with our seaside location's distinct atmosphere, combining contemporary advancement with historic appeal. Our design philosophy integrated opposing concepts - YIN and YANG - fusing traditional Key West architecture with modern steel and glass construction.
Visitors are welcomed by a 400-gallon saltwater tank set against oiled teak, stainless steel, and polished granite surfaces. Multiple meeting spaces and client rooms separated by utility areas and hallways enable private concurrent sessions. Our comprehensive testing facility featuring integrated audio/video streaming and monitoring capabilities delivers cost-effective user research compared to external facilities. Innovation spaces and development workshops facilitate our creative and technical operations. The renowned Dunedin downtown area with its restaurants, pubs, boutiques, accommodations, and harbor remains within walking distance, fostering an exceptional professional and personal lifestyle.
