Ergonomic Intraoral 3D Scanner
3DISC was referred to BH as a leading design resource to develop a highly ergonomic intraoral dental scanner. BH began the project by reviewing the client's feasibility engineering output and discussing opportunities to optimize size, shape and functionality with the optical design team. A secondary internal layout was then created in 3D-CAD as an underlay from which to create conceptual housings. Handmade study models followed by rapid 3D-printed mockups were created to assess ergonomic solutions. Preliminary docking stations were also envisioned for the conceptual Handpiece designs.
Following review with the client, 2 final designs were selected for refined 3D-CAD modeling and fabricated into appearance models. Docking stations were refined to suit the design directions for both. The models were preference-tested at BH with 6 intended end-users and a report published with recommendations for the final design. The selected design was updated and CAD database transferred to the client's engineering team to finalize for production tooling.
