J-Plasma
Helium-based Plasma Cutting and Ablating Laparoscopic Instrument
Bovie Medical Corporation, a long-term client, approached BH to help develop a breakthrough surgical instrument that would compete in the same market space as J&J Ethicon and Olympus/Gyrus, the two market leaders. As such, the J-Plasma design had to offer class-leading ergonomics and aesthetics to support its superior technical performance. BH began the project by assessing the client's feasibility prototype, and conducting a heuristic analysis on the competitive devices. Opportunities to improve on overall functionality were established with the client, from which a few 2D options were developed for further discussion and selection of the preferred design direction. The internal component layout was then optimized in 3D-CAD as an underlay from which to create conceptual housings. Handmade study models followed by rapid 3D-printed mockups were created to assess ergonomic and branding solutions in an in-house study.
Following further technical and marketing review with the client, a refined 3D-CAD model was developed and the CAD database transferred to the client's engineering team to finalize for production tooling.
