Werewolf
RF Controller and Wand R&D for Arthroscopic Sports Medicine Procedures
ArthroCare asked BH to support the usability research and design of their new Werewolf RF Generator, used to treat arthroscopic sports injuries. BH structured the project with a series of formative usability studies to evaluate user-preferences regarding system configuration and mounting options and to confirm design direction of the Controller, its GUI, the Handpiece, integrated peristaltic pump and other interfaces. Along with the need to optimize ergonomics and fluid-ingress management, the design of the Controller and Handpiece needed to look sporty as well as clinical in appearance to match the Sports Division. The final aesthetic concept involved bold color striping and consumer-like GUI graphics to distinguish Werewolf from other RF systems.
Once the industrial design had been established, BH worked closely with the contract manufacturer Jabil/Nypro and their molding partners to develop the mechanical design. This included team effort to design the bespoke peristaltic pump and auto-deploying covers, housing parts design, assembly methodologies and advanced 3D-CAD assistance where necessary to complete the database for successful design transfer to the toolmaker.
