BH Critical Care System
Adaptable Medical Device Console and Handpiece
Because so much of the design work BH accomplishes is in the medical industry, where lead times to launch are very long, coupled to some client policies that do not permit disclosure of outsourced R&D teams, we decided to invest in developing an in-house case study of a typical medical device system design that requires a wide spectrum of services. This includes industrial design, human-factors engineering, mechanical engineering and contextual workflow in clinical environments. The intent was to showcase our experience and creativity when developing similar devices under client confidentiality. The BH Medical Device Console design can be applied to OR, ICU and bedside environments for therapies such as ventilation, dialysis and IV; surgical procedures involving energy-bases such as RF, plasma, and ultrasound, suction and aspiration systems.
The design includes an electro-mechanical housing (with thermal ventilation), integrated peristaltic pump and single-use patient-circuit cartridge, adjustable display (size and rake) and ergonomic Handpiece/Wand. The system includes a dedicated nesting rollstand for compact storage and multi-unit deployment, pole-stand, table-top and rack mount configurations and a quick-remove feature for Controller portability. Because this design is owned by BH, we are free to discuss details of this design with potential clients as a means to assess our design-thinking and overall knowledge of medical device design gathered over hundreds of projects spanning 2 decades.
