Argo Semi-Ruggedized Laptop
From consumer-grade to battle-ready toughness
Enhanced to military standards
Works in the rain
Strengthened consumer-based laptop
BlackHägen Design, Inc. (BH) has proposed a Time & Materials design project for VT Miltope to develop the Argo, a semi-rugged laptop for both commercial and military use. The project involves adapting donor electronics from a mainstream consumer laptop, which BH has already conceptualized for Miltope, into a ruggedized enclosure capable of meeting IP-53 ratings and various test requirements such as impact resistance, heat dissipation, and humidity. The design will incorporate additional DB-9 and ethernet connectors via extended bumper accessories. BH will focus on applying the best materials and processes, as well as mechanical and industrial design, for an initial 17″ display model, with potential for follow-up sizes and configurations. The project is expected to span 3-4 months, with design, testing, and manufacturing support extending beyond this period. Key deliverables include the development of sub-system designs, EVT (Engineering Validation Test) and DVT (Design Validation Test) units, Critical Design Reviews, and final 3D-CAD and 2D drawings to support production tooling.
Design and Development
• Ruggedize third-party consumer laptop for commercial and military applications
• Integrate added IO modules, IP-53 water-resistance, carry handle, and secure latching
• Improve heat dissipation due to added performance components
• Develop mechanical parts using thin-walled metal thixoforming and overmolded TPE
• Oversee DfX optimization with global suppliers
