Computer-based Educational System helps Kids learn Banking and Investment Skills
Consumer-industry start-up Electus Global Education came to BH with a concept for a brand-new educational computer platform that teaches children from age four to adult using a series of software modules that grow with the child in terms of capability and complexity. Electus provided BH with some early illustrations of their vision for the hardware with which BH was to develop the concept into (semi) functional proof-of-concept (POC) prototypes for the production design. This POC was intended to help Electus raise the necessary capital for the full production development.
BH began by considering the overall system configuration, including interface layout, display size, input hardware and most importantly the unique "banking module" format that collected, recorded and displayed individual account savings. The entertainment factor was critical because this product had to appeal to a very young user, but needed to be durable and compact because of space limitations. Multiple rapid configurations in 3 rounds were created in CAD and presented to a global client team for evaluation and selection of a final form factor for the POC.
Limited funds necessitated developing a design that used a donor Windows tablet PC as the engine for the prototype. BH sourced a readily-available tablet of approximately the correct size, and designed the system using a Smart USB 3.0 Hub and embedded banking module controller. Included in the POC design was the development of a rudimentary coin-recognition sub-assembly. Six sets of prototypes (and 24 banking modules) were fabricated, assembled and debugged for functional evaluation, usability studies and fund-raising.
