Develop super low-cost hybrid-use system

Reduced per-case cost by 80%

Introduced 2-step cleaning sterilization-cycler concept

BlackHägen Design (BH) has proposed a research and feasibility design project for Smith & Nephew Wound Management to develop a low-cost derivative of the Versajet Handset for use with the Versajet II Console in hydrosurgery. The new design will feature a reposable Handpiece capable of 200 sterilization cycles and a single-use distal tip that ensures performance and supports a recurring revenue model. The project aims to achieve a $50 manufacturing cost for the Handpiece assembly and $8 for the distal tip while maintaining the performance, compatibility, and ruggedness of the current Handset. The development process will include iterative design sprints, feasibility prototypes, performance testing, and usability assessments to optimize cost, functionality, and stakeholder alignment for formal development.

•Cost-Effective Redesign: BH will develop a reposable Handpiece and single-use distal tip for the Versajet system, targeting manufacturing costs of $50 and $8, respectively.
• Iterative Development Process: The project will follow 6-8 week design sprints, incorporating feasibility prototypes, performance testing, and cost-performance analysis.
• Maintained Performance and Compatibility: The new Handset will retain the ruggedness, ease-of-use, and compatibility with the Versajet II Console, ensuring efficacy and user satisfaction.

Feasibility R&D
• Results-driven, sprint-based feasibility design execution
• Cost-driven prioritization methodology focused on reducing or avoiding largest cost drivers first
• Speed-to-prototype testing ensured accelerated feasibility research
• Cost mitigation measures not to adversely affect usability and procedural time
• Develop value proposition metrics to determine minimally viable functionality in intended markets
• Component specification, DfX and supply-chain re-evaluation included in feasibility efforts
